In the book, Gandalf says this to Frodo at Bag End, after Frodo wishes the Ring had never come to him. Peter Jackson’s 2001 film moves the moment to the Mines of Moria. Tolkien, who served in the First World War, returns often to the idea that ordinary people must answer for the times they are given.
The story behind
Open any quote and read a few sentences on the scene it was said in, how the film changed it, and why it still matters. Written from the source, never from memory.

Most quote apps repeat each other. Quoteworthy only publishes a line when it comes with a citation: the book and chapter, the speech and date, the letter and recipient, or the film and scene.
Lines that were never said by the person they are pinned on are kept out, however popular they are.
The App Store link will appear here when the app is live. Until then, the quill is still writing.
